DESCRIPTION:Spice World are visiting Nipaluna/Hobart from Walyalup/Naarm an
d celebrating the\nrelease of their new record "Purple Patch" at the Grand
	 Poobah on Friday 23\nOctober\, with...\n\nThe Native Cats\n\nTroth\n\nThe
	 Pits\n\n\n\nDoors from 7pm\n\n\n\nAbout Spice World "Purple Patch"\n\nThe
image of a “purple patch” was immortalised by Roman poet Horace. He used
the\nflashy textile metaphor to describe (and warn against) using ornate p
assages in\nan otherwise plain piece of writing. In modern parlance\, mean
while\, the phrase\nusually refers to a time of unusual success or good fo
rtune. \n\n\nBoth meanings find their way\, winkingly or otherwise\, into
describing the new\nrecord from Walyalup/Naarm-based yearners Spice World.
\n\nGood fortune was certainly at the band’s door with their debut album i
	n 2023 -\n“There’s No “I” In Spice World” received widespread acclaim\, ap
	pearing at #53 on\nRolling Stone’s Best Australian Albums Of The 2020’s. A
lbum track Mountain Pony\n20 was named in their list of Best Australian So
ngs of the 21st Century. The\nrough-and-ready record led to national tours
\, international airplay and a sudden\ncohort of fans around the world.  \
n\nOn Purple Patch\, Spice World continue to prioritise an unserious and s
ometimes\nunplanned approach to placing music on the permanent record. Muc
h of the album\nwas recorded and mixed by Jeremy Segal in Fremantle the da
	y after “There’s No\n“I” In Spice World” was released\, just a few hours b
efore the band was once\nagain flung widely across the continent. Other so
ngs were learned and tracked in\nloungerooms and bedrooms within a given a
fternoon. Venetians was written on the\nday of recording. The Price Isn’t
Right features percussion played on a\nsharehouse chandelier - the type of
detail that mingles with clarinet\, flute\,\npiano and other surprising a
dditions to fill out the record’s scruffy sense of\nDIY “ornateness.”\n\nT
rue to Spice World’s deceptively playful style\, Purple Patch also has its
share\nof pathos and purpose. The record leans into critiques of hustle c
ulture\,\nprogress and profiteering - and looks to the stubborn pursuit of
freedom and\nbeauty alongside. Often choosing a more pissed-off and polem
	ical approach\ncompared with the band’s debut\, tracks like Bull’s Tools\,
Mercy\, The Price isn’t\nRight and Baby’s A Bulldozer rail against the ch
auvinism of industry with one\nhand\, tracing out the poetry and absurdity
of daily life with the other. \n\nElsewhere\, the band’s devotion to pini
ng and silliness resonate as strongly as\never. See the bittersweet jangle
of single Connie or album closer Fortune Free\njuxtaposed with the “lesbi
an punk bombast” of Mean Girls\; or the bright-eyed and\ncharming Choir of
Angels and I Remember Isaac\, for the full spectrum of\nmelancholy\, goof
iness and desire. \n\nSpice World is Billie Burrows\, Lyndon Blue\, Julia
Suddenly\, Rhian Todhunter and\nLayla Martin. They reside across Naarm and
Boorloo. \n\n\n\n\n\n“Purple Patch” is set for release via Rough Skies Re
cords on October 8. Vinyl\nand digital album available for pre-order now.

	ughskiesrecords.bandcamp.com/album/purple-patch]\n\n\n\nThis event takes p
lace on Muwinina Country. All bands pay respect to Palawa /\nTasmanian Abo
riginal people as the ongoing Custodians. Sovereignty never ceded.
